Our heroes
"True stories of children who opened up their hearts and minds to the unfairness of the world and decided to try and make a difference, because everyone deserves to be happy"--Dust jacket
Separate is never equal
Almost 10 years before Brown vs. Board of Education, Sylvia Mendez and her parents helped end school segregation in California. An American citizen of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage who spoke and wrote perfect English, Mendez was denied enrollment to a "Whites only"; school. Her parents took action by organizing the Hispanic community and filing a lawsuit in federal district court. Their success eventually brought an end to the era of segregated education in California.
Sheila Says We’re Weird
"Sheila can’t figure out why her neighbors hang their laundry outside instead of using a dryer. And why do they ride their bikes to the library instead of just using the car? Why do they mow their lawn with a push mower when a gas mower is much faster? But their homemade soup sure tastes good, and she likes picking cherry tomatoes and strawberries in their garden, and it’s pretty cozy to sit around the woodstove in the winter. Are Sheila’s neighbors really weird, or do they have some good ideas going on? Ruth Ann Smalley writes about green living, fair trade, and health for children and adults. Jennifer Emery has illustrated numerous children’s books." -- publlisher
Stand up for Soraya / Leve kanpe pou Soraya
"Soraya dreams of the life she once knew: a loving mother, school, hope for the future. But now that her mother has died, her father has re-married, and her step-mother treats her as a slave, she feels alone and invisible. Until one day when she meets a little girl named Anita, who courage and sense of justice could change the course of Soraya's life. Through this story the authors issue a challenge: Could you have this courage to change a life?"- -Publisher

The soda bottle school
In a Guatemalan village, students squished into their tiny schoolhouse, two grades to a classroom. The villagers had tried expanding the school, but the money ran out before the project was finished. No money meant no wall materials, and that meant no more room for the students. Until one boy got a wonderful, crazy idea: Why not use soda bottles, which were scattered all around, to form the cores of the walls?
This Day in June
"A picture book illustrating a Pride parade. The endmatter serves as a primer on LGBT history and culture and explains the references made in the story"--

With books and bricks
"Booker T. Washington had an incredible passion for learning. Born a slave, he taught himself to read. When the Civil War ended, Booker finally fulfilled his dream of attending school. After graduation, he was invited to teach in Tuskegee, Alabama. Finding many eager students, but no school, Booker set out to build his own school-- brick by brick"--|cProvided by publisher
