Home in the rain
Francie and her pregnant mom are driving home from Grandma's in the heavy rain. When they're still far from home, they stop for a picnic. As the car windows fog up, Francie spells out her name, "Daddy" and "Mom," and leaves one space free for her soon-to-be baby sister
Truthfully, something smelled fishy!
A humorous retelling of the fairy tale, told from the point of view of the fisherman's wife, who dreams of having plenty of food (she did not have enough to eat as a child), and is very puzzled about how her poor fisherman husband suddenly seems able to provide her with everything she ever dreamed of
Seeing into tomorrow
From watching a sunset to finding a beetle, Richard Wright's haiku puts everyday moments into focus. Paired with the photo-collage artwork of Nina Crews, Seeing into Tomorrow celebrates the lives of contemporary African American boys
From the stars in the sky to the fish in the sea
A magical gender variant child brings transformation and change to the world around them thanks to their mother's enduring love. In the magical time between night and day, when both the sun and the moon are in the sky, a child is born in a little blue house on a hill. And Miu Lan is not just any child, but one who can change into any shape they can imagine. The only problem is they can't decide what to be: a boy or a girl? A bird or a fish? A flower or a shooting star? At school, though, they must endure inquisitive looks and difficult questions from the other children, and have trouble finding friends who will accept them for who they are. But they find comfort in the loving arms of their mother, who always offers them the same loving refrain: "whatever you dream of / i believe you can be / from the stars in the sky to the fish in the sea." In this captivating, beautifully imagined picture book about gender, identity, and the acceptance of the differences between us, Miu Lan faces many questions about who they are and who they may be. But one thing’s for sure: no matter what this child becomes, their mother will love them just the same.
Draw the line
After two boys drawing their own lines realize they can connect them, a misstep creates a rift between them
The Best Tailor in Pinbauê
Uncle Flores is the best tailor in the town of Pinbauê in Brazil. He used to make colourful costumes for the carnival, but nowadays he only makes grey uniforms for the factory workers. The houses are covered with dust from the factory, the river water is murky, and everything is drab. Edinho, his nephew, comes by every day after school to help cut and iron the cloth and listen to his uncle's stories. But when the factory tells Uncle Flores they don't need his uniforms anymore, Edinho comes up with an ingenious idea to get his uncle back to work and make everyone in town happier
I am Loved
"For this collection, verses by Nikki Giovanni were hand- selected by Newbery honoree Ashley Bryan who then added a visual layering that drums the most important message of all to young, old, parent, child, grandparent, and friend alike: You are loved. You are loved. You are loved. As a bonus, one page is mirrored, so children reading the book can see exactly who is loved--themselves!" -- publisher
You hold me up
An evocative picture book intended to foster reconciliation among children and encourage them to show each other love and support.
That is my dream!
"Dream Variation," one of Langston Hughes's most celebrated poems, about the dream of a world free of discrimination and racial prejudice, is now a picture book stunningly illustrated by Daniel Miyares. An African-American boy faces the harsh reality of segregation and racial prejudice, but he dreams of a different life--one full of freedom, hope, and wild possibility, where he can fling his arms wide in the face of the sun. |cProvided by publisher
